High-bay warehouses and automated logistics centers present a nightmare fire scenario: towering rack storage of often combustible goods, high ceilings that allow heat and smoke to accumulate rapidly, and limited traditional wall options due to the need for vast, open floor plans. In these environments, ALC fire walls are engineered not just as partitions, but as strategic firebreaks that compartmentalize immense volumes, protecting billions in inventory and allowing firefighting forces a chance to intervene.

The design challenge is height and load. Standard walls cannot withstand the lateral forces in these large, single-story spaces. ALC panels, however, can be fabricated as tall as the building itself (e.g., 30+ meters) and installed as self-supporting or braced barrier walls. Their high compressive strength allows them to act as shear walls, providing lateral stability while fulfilling their primary fire-stopping function. By dividing a 50,000 sq.m. warehouse into smaller, manageable fire cells (e.g., 10,000 sq.m. each), an ALC wall limits the “fuel load” exposed to any single fire, dramatically reducing potential total loss.

In the event of a rack fire—known for intense, vertical “flue effect” spread—an ALC barrier wall prevents the fire from jumping aisles and consuming the entire facility. This containment is crucial for several reasons. It protects critical infrastructure like automated retrieval systems. It maintains access routes for firefighters. Perhaps most importantly, it allows for the potential success of in-rack sprinkler systems by limiting the fire’s demand on the water supply. For insurers and risk managers, the presence of such compartmentation is a key factor in underwriting and can make the difference between a survivable incident and a total loss that shuts down a supply chain.
