Retrofitting a live hospital, especially a sensitive area like an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), is a monumental challenge. The project must uphold the highest standards of fire safety and infection control while causing minimal disruption to critical, life-saving operations. This case study outlines how a major urban hospital successfully used ALC wall panels to upgrade its ICU fire compartmentation without relocating a single patient.

The challenge was to create new fire separations between patient pods and nursing stations to meet updated fire codes. Traditional construction methods involving wet trades (concrete, plaster) were impossible due to dust, moisture, and extended cure times. The solution was prefabricated ALC panels. All panels were precision-cut off-site to the exact dimensions, with pre-formed chases for medical gas lines and electrical conduits. On-site work was scheduled in phased, overnight shifts. The lightweight panels were moved quietly into position and installed using a rapid-setting, low-dust adhesive system. Seams were finished with a specialized, mold-resistant joint compound compatible with the hospital's strict hygiene protocols.

The results were transformative. The new ALC walls achieved the required 3-hour fire rating, creating distinct fire compartments that would contain a blaze and protect vulnerable, immobile patients. The smooth, non-porous surface of the finished walls was easily cleanable, supporting the ICU's infection control standards. Crucially, the entire installation was completed with zero downtime for the unit; patients and staff experienced only minimal, planned noise interruptions during low-activity periods. The hospital administration reported that the speed, cleanliness, and performance of the ALC retrofit set a new benchmark for future renovation projects in other high-risk areas like operating suites and pharmacies.
